How to tie your belt

To Acheive Gold Belt

You must have three months training before you can acheive Gold belt.

Terms: Front kick?, roundhouse kick?, high block?, ready position?, numbers one and two?, one tenant of Taekwondo, and be able to define Taekwondo

Board Break: Single board break: Hammer heel strike

Fundamentals & Combinations:

  • Front kick - roundhouse kick
  • Skip side kick
  • Horse stance - middle target punch
  • Outside-inside block
  • High block - reverse punch (walking stance)

Poomsae: Basic Form 1 (Gibon 1)

To Acheive Gold Tip

At each level you must know all previous rank requirements.

Please note, this video does not include the high blocks for moves 6, 7, 8 or 14, 15, 16 that our school utilizes. We also do not raise our front foot on our back stance, and our punches are middle punches.

Poomsae: Taeguek 1 (Taeguek Il Jang) ☰

Taeguek 1 jang represents the symbol of "Keon", which means the Heaven and light (yang). As the "Keon" symbolizes the beginning of the creation of all things in the universe, so does the Taeguek 1 jang symbolize the beginning of your training of Taekwondo.

To Acheive Green Belt

Terms: relax (at ease)?, stance?, crescent kick?, sparring?, numbers 1-5?, 4 tenets, explanation of how to perform a roundhouse kick/back stance, proper way to make a fist

Poomsae: Taeguek 2 (Taeguek Ee Jang) ☱

Taeguek 2 jang symbolizes the "Tae" which signifies the inner firmness and the outer softness.

To Acheive Green Tip

Poomsae: Taeguek 3 (Taeguek Sam Jang) ☲

Taeguek 3 jang symbolizes the "Ra", represents "hot and bright". This is to encorage the trainees to harbor a sense of justice and ardor for training - passion.

To Acheive Blue Belt

Terms: strike?, low block?, numbers 1-10?, all 5 tenets and what they mean to you, explanation of how to perform back kick/middle block

  • At least 3 of the techniques should include takedowns, and 2 wrist/arm locks.
  • Demonstrate ability to react with little hesitation upon kihap to attack.
  • Demonstrate ability to fall correctly when taken down.
  • 3 step sparring use of 3 different blocks against roundhouse/ reverse punch, use of crescent kick against reverse punch.

Sparring:

Demonstrate understanding of rules (no blatant violations such as grabbing, kicking to back, etc.), attempt various footwork techniques (switch, slide, step, fake, etc.), attempt counter attacks during opponent's attacks, show use of both legs, various techniques, appropriate use of punch.

Poomsae: Taeguek 4 (Taeguek Sah Jang) ☳

Taeguek 4 jang symbolizes the "Jin", represents the thunder meaning great power and dignity.

To Acheive Blue Tip

Terms: knife hand strike?, knife hand block?, back stance?, walking stance?, explanation of how 5 tenets are applied in taekwondo, explanation of how to perform a crescent kick (O-I and I-O) and knife hand block

Board Break: 1 hand technique and 1 foot technique as determined by instructor

  • 2 defenses from hair grab and rear attack (ie bear hug, rear choke, full nelson), and one other self defense of choice
  • At least 4 of the techniques should include takedowns, and 2 wrist/arm locks
  • Techniques should be performed with little hesitation, intensity, kihap, and full self control
  • Techniques should be completed with a logical finishing technique
  • 3 step sparring use of 3 different blocks against roundhouse/ reverse punch, use of crescent kick against reverse punch
  • The third technique should be followed by a logical counter technique with at least 1 takedown

Sparring:

Demonstrate understanding of rules (no blatant violations such as grabbing. kicking to back, etc.), recognize proper footwork for situations, show timing improvement in counter attacks, show multiple kick combinations in attacks. show ability to react in close quarter situations (punch/clinch).

Show ability to control level of fighting based on opponent's training needs (le. against a less experienced/smaller fighter) by reducing power, and speed while still attacking and countering during matches.

Poomsae: Taeguek 5 (Taeguek Oh Jang) ☴

Taeguek 5 jang symbolizes the "Son" (or Seon), represents the wind, meaning both mighty force and calmness according to its strength and weakness.

To Acheive Brown Belt

Terms: adult black belt grade?, junior black belt grade?, wedge block?, explanation of how 5 tenets are applied outside of taekwondo, explanation of how to perform a hook kick and ridge hand/palm heel strike

Board Break: 1 hand technique and 1 foot technique as determined by instructor

  • Techniques should be performed with little hesitation, intensity, kihap, and full self control
  • Techniques should be completed with a logical finishing technique
  • 3 step sparing-use of 4 different defenses against roundhouse/reverse punch, and the third technique should be followed by a logical counter technique with a least 1 takedown
  • Chosen techniques should demonstrate ability to use more advanced techniques/defenses

Sparring:

Demonstrate understanding of rules (no blatant violations such as grabbing. kicking to back, etc.), recognize and use proper footwork and fakes for situation, show timing ability in counter attacks, use of different techniques to counter, show abilly to kick to the head with control (soft strike or no touch to helmet), show ability to respond appropriately to different types of fighters (aggressive, taller/shorter, etc.)

Poomsae: Taeguek 6 (Taeguek Ryook Jang) ☵

Taeguek 6 Jang symbolizes the "Kam" (or Gam), represents water, meaning incessant flow and softness; it is flexible and formless.

To Acheive Red Belt

Terms: Thank you?, hook kick?, explanation of how to perform a spin hook kick and fake jump front kick. Explain how to perform double roundhouse kicks. Explanation of how to produce faster kicks versus more powerful kicks.

Board Break: 1 hand technique and 1 foot technique as determined by instructor

Fundamentals & Combinations

  • Tornado kick
  • Increased proficiency at jump back kick and flying side kick (base leg off ground)
  • Front leg roundhouse kick high spin hook kick (whip kick)
  • Push kick
  • Fake jump crescent
  • Back kick-O-crescent-skip side kick-back kick
  • Front leg front kick-jump roundhouse kick
  • Switch stance-spin hook kick
  • Complex combinations using more difficult kicks as designed by student

Self Defense:

  • 3 step sparring-use of 5 different defenses against roundhouse/reverse punch/front kick.
  • The third technique should be followed by a logical counter technique with a least 1 takedown.
  • Chosen techniques should demonstrate ability to use more advanced techniques/defenses than previous ranks.

Taequek 7 Jang syboolizes the "Kan" (or Gan), represents the mountain, meaning tranquility, land majesty, and firmness.

Earning Your Black Belt and Beyond

Required to know all previous rank requirements and demonstrate the following so that instructors are able to recommend student for black belt test under Master Larry Phillips. 6 Dan:

  1. Attitude, commitment, self control exhibited routinely in class
  2. Ability to perform all previous rank requirements at a level of proficiency that would enable the student to be a positive example to lower ranking students

Terms: All terms used in class and included in terminology handout

Board Break: 1 hand technique, 1 foot technique, and one speed break as determined by instructor.

Fundamentals & Combinations

  • All techniques required of previous rank used in combinations as requested by instructors and able to explain how and when to use the techniques.

Poomsae: Taeguek 8 (Taeguek Pal Jang) ☷

Taeguek 8 Jang symbolizes the "Kon" (or Gon), represents dark (Yin) and earth, meaning the root and settlement and also the beginning and the end. This is the last of the eight Taegeuk poomsaes, which may enable the trainees to undergo the Dan (black belt) promotion test.
